DeepSeek-V5 identifiers spotted in official GitHub repo
Developers found three previously unseen identifiers in DeepSeek's official GitHub code repository: deepseek-v5, deepseek-v5-open, and deepseek-v5-next, listed alongside the existing deepseek-v4-pro.
From the code structure, these entries are just placeholders at the framework level for now. The v5-open path has almost no version requirement, so old clients can keep working after a server-side switch. The v5-next path requires clients to upgrade first. This means DeepSeek has prepared both a smooth transition plan and a forced update plan for V5.
For context, DeepSeek released the V4 series as a preview in April 2026. V4-Pro became fully available in August, and the V4.1-Flash launched in September with a new architecture but still under the V4 name.
Still, placeholders do not mean a launch is coming soon. So far, DeepSeek has made no announcement about the V5 series and has not explained the placeholders.
