EU Court Advisor Says Google Gemini May Break News Copyright Rules

An advisor to the EU's top court said Google's Gemini chatbot may break copyright rules when it uses news reports to answer user questions. The opinion came in a case filed by Hungarian website operator Like Company against Google.

He noted that Gemini could violate publishers' rights if it grabs news by bypassing paywalls, or repeats the exact wording of a story in its answers. But copyright law only protects how facts are written, not the facts themselves.

He also said using copyrighted material to train AI models is allowed under EU rules for text and data mining. Such opinions are not legally binding, but judges often follow them. As AI news summaries keep pulling traffic away from traditional search, a ruling that makes Google pay for news could be a lifeline for online media.
