Framework CEO Criticizes Industry's 'AI First' Pursuit: Personal Computing Devices May Come to an End
Framework CEO Nirav Patel, head of the modular laptop manufacturer, recently published an article expressing concerns about the current AI wave, stating that personal computing devices may come to an end. His original intention in founding Framework was to create high-performance, lightweight, repairable and upgradeable laptops, making 'maintainability' a common industry practice—even Apple has begun to embrace this concept in its latest laptop products.
Patel argues that the industry's pursuit of 'AI first' has led to rapid consumption of resources like memory and storage. Computing power is gradually shifting to the cloud, and rising chip costs may replace device purchase habits with subscriptions, while closed systems are replacing open ecosystems. He compares computers to changing from 'bicycles for the mind' to self-driving cars, where users lose control.
Framework says it will not be defeated by 'AI ruling everything' and will continue to strive for users to have truly their own computing tools, ensuring users can freely choose systems, modify devices, and keep data local instead of uploading to the cloud.
