French AI firm Mistral opens up weights of trillion-parameter model Mistral Large 4
French AI company Mistral AI officially released the weights of its latest model Mistral Large 4, codenamed "le Chonk", on October 29 local time. The model has 1 trillion total parameters and 49 billion active ones. It is natively multimodal and was trained from scratch on 3,800 NVIDIA Grace Blackwell GPUs in Mistral's own data center in Europe. This version is an upgraded one with better performance than the initial release three weeks ago. On the Artificial Analysis coding agent benchmark, it scored 48%, roughly on par with open-source model GLM-5.3, while using 47% fewer tokens per task. The API costs $0.70 per million input tokens and $2.10 per million output tokens. The model uses a modified MIT license, free for personal, academic, and regular business use. Cloud providers reselling it as a service need a separate commercial license. The weights are now available on Hugging Face.
