Goldman Sachs Says AI Could Affect 15 Million U.S. Jobs, But Workers Can Find New Ones
Goldman Sachs predicts that AI will push about 9% of U.S. workers, or 15 million people, to leave their current jobs, especially in tech, consulting, and graphic design where AI tools are already common. The bank estimates AI cuts U.S. job growth by 10,000 to 15,000 per month.
But Goldman's economist Joseph Briggs says these jobs won't disappear forever, and the labor market can absorb them. Over the past 80 years, about 85% of job growth came from new roles created by technology. The U.S. creates about 30 million jobs each year while cutting 29 million, so a 5% increase in job creation could rehire all workers affected by AI.
MIT researcher Neil Thompson says AI's impact on jobs won't be as fast as its tech progress. Most jobs will be partly automated, not fully replaced. He compares AI to a "rising tide" that workers can adapt to, not a sudden "big wave."
