Google DeepMind CEO: Integrating company-wide resources to catch up with AI rivals like a startup
In a recent episode of the '20VC' podcast, Demis Hassabis, CEO of Google DeepMind, shared the lab's strategy to catch up with AI competitors over the past two to three years. He mentioned that Google integrated top talent and computing power across the company—computing power being one of the biggest bottlenecks in AI research—to focus on building a single large model instead of developing multiple versions simultaneously.
Hassabis stated that the team operates efficiently like a startup to return to the technological forefront and stay ahead. DeepMind was founded in 2010, acquired by Google in 2014, and merged with Google Brain in 2023 to form Google DeepMind, which developed tools like Gemini. He claimed that about 90% of breakthroughs in the modern AI industry come from Google Brain, Google Research, or DeepMind, with competitors including OpenAI, Anthropic, and Microsoft AI.
