Google Gemini CLI Policy Adjustments: Free Users Limited to Flash Model, Third-Party OAuth Abuse to Be Blocked
Google recently announced three policy adjustments for Gemini CLI to take effect on March 25. Ryan J. Salva, Product Lead of Gemini CLI and Senior Product Director of Google Developer Experience, posted an announcement on GitHub covering free user permissions, traffic prioritization, and abuse detection.
The adjustments include: free users will lose access to the Pro model and can only use Gemini Flash; traffic will be prioritized based on license type and account status, with possible capacity limits during peak hours; abuse detection will be upgraded to crack down on third-party software using OAuth authentication to siphon free credits, and violating accounts will be marked.
Previously, Gemini CLI was popular for offering free access to the Pro model, with many third-party tools using it to get free credits. Salva suggested developers can obtain their own paid API keys via AI Studio or Vertex AI to control quotas and billing independently.
