Huawei executive responds to US AI slowdown calls: China needs to speed up
Huawei has released the Q&A content from its Connect conference. Rotating Chairman Xu Zhijun responded to calls from US AI model providers to slow down AI development, saying we need to watch the level and pace of AI progress in both China and the US.
According to Xu, most Chinese AI models are open source and their progress is fairly transparent, while US mainstream providers have stronger computing power and only they truly know how complex their models are. He thinks the Chinese market may feel AI risks less than the US, so Chinese model providers need to move faster until they can feel those risks. He stressed the need to balance AI development with risk management, and to make sure AI is used for good, not evil.
The slowdown calls were sparked by an article from Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Elon Musk both agreed. NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang disagreed, saying the AI industry doesn't need new laws for safety and that safety and speed can go together.
