Illinois may ban smart glasses while driving, with fines up to $150
Smart glasses are facing more restrictions. After bans in some courts, cruise ships, and school exams, Illinois is trying to stop drivers from wearing them behind the wheel. The state passed an update to its 'electronic device' definition, waiting for the governor's signature to become the first US state to ban smart glasses while driving. The new law covers all smart glasses, even hands-free ones. It says exemptions for using electronic devices while driving don't apply to smart glasses, no matter if they're in hands-free or voice control mode, or if the car is stopped in traffic. First-time violators get a $75 fine (about 508 yuan), and repeat offenders face $150 (about 1016 yuan). If wearing smart glasses causes a serious crash, drivers could face misdemeanor or felony charges. New York had a similar proposal but it never went to a vote.
