Japan's AI chip startup TAI finishes Sting Ray prototype, plans mass production by 2028
Japan-based chip startup TokyoArtisan Intelligence (TAI) has finished testing its 40nm edge AI chip prototype "Sting Ray" built on FPGA, and is moving to mass production. The chip is low-power and fast-response, designed for AI upgrades in infrastructure, industry, and robotics. It can also adapt to multiple AI models at once.
TAI also shared the roadmap for its next chip "Manta Ray", which will use the same 40nm process from UMC. Plans include completing the alpha design software by early 2027, making engineering samples by mid-2027, launching evaluation boards later that year, and starting mass production in late 2027. The final evaluation board for the mass-produced chip is expected in early 2028.
