Japan Starts Building 400MW AI Data Center with Over $15 Billion Investment
Japan's largest power company JERA signed a memorandum of understanding with Dell and sovereign AI infrastructure developer RHAELM. The three parties will work together to set standards for AI infrastructure development in Japan.
The first data center under the agreement will be built in Chiba Prefecture, east of Tokyo. It will have a design capacity of 400MW, making it Japan's largest single data center site. Total investment is expected to exceed $15 billion. Apollo will provide financing support for the project.
The data center is located near JERA's own thermal power station and uses behind-the-meter power supply. This greatly shortens the construction and review time for supporting power infrastructure. The site is expected to go online in 2028.
JERA and RHAELM also plan to expand this model to other JERA sites, aiming to achieve multi-GW level AI infrastructure capacity by the 2030s.
