Karpathy Proposes 'Org Code': IDEs Will Evolve to Manage Multi-Agent Teams in the Age of Intelligent Agents
Recently, OpenAI co-founder Andrej Karpathy proposed the 'org code' concept. He believes that in the age of intelligent agents, IDEs will not disappear but expand their functions—human programming will upgrade from single files or agents to managing teams of multiple agents.
Karpathy cited organizational structures of six companies like Amazon and Google, noting these models are essentially 'org code', and future IDEs will help build, run, and manage such patterns. He said: 'You can't fork traditional organizations (like Microsoft), but you can fork agent organizations.'
He further stated that human organizations are not transparent enough for CEOs (unable to see all activity status in real time), while agent organizations are naturally observable and controllable in real time. In the future, one may even manage organizations via voice on mobile phones, with real-time data.
Recently, Karpathy has been outputting intensively on multi-agent collaboration: releasing autoresearch on March 6, launching AgentHub on March 9, proposing an agent command center IDE on March 11, and today abstracting the 'org code' framework, forming a complete thought evolution.
