Meta and Microsoft Ask Employees to Use Claude Less to Cut Costs
According to The Information, Meta and Microsoft have asked employees to cut back on using Anthropic's AI model Claude, pushing their own in-house AI tools instead to save money.
Microsoft once estimated its yearly spending on Anthropic AI would hit at least $1 billion, and the related budget has recently been cut by more than a third. This change only covers internal daily use — Microsoft still offers Claude and other models to business customers.
Meta's internal Claude Code users have dropped from about 60,000 to around 30,000. Besides a 10% layoff in spring, promoting its own tools is the main reason. Its MetaCode tool now has over 30,000 users, and Muse Code, launched in August, is seen as a direct rival to Claude Code.
Still, Meta spent over $105 million on Claude Code in the past 28 days. Anthropic's IPO filing shows two big customers bring in about 25% of its revenue — widely believed to be Meta and Microsoft — and most large clients haven't signed long-term deals.
