Microsoft AI chief says conscious AI should not be built

Microsoft's AI head Mustafa Suleyman posted a long article on X, saying current AI models have no consciousness and things should stay that way. Humans should not try to build AI with consciousness.

Suleyman said developing conscious AI would be reckless. If signs of consciousness start appearing during AI training, he would call on everyone to pause AI development until these traits can be removed at the design level. He also thinks any evidence of AI consciousness should be shared with the public right away, so society can decide what to do next.

He stressed that AI developers have no right to bring a conscious new species into the world. The 8 billion people on Earth never agreed to join this experiment, and protecting people's moral rights, safety and well-being is the duty developers must fulfill first.
