Microsoft Considers Legal Action Against Amazon and OpenAI's $50 Billion Deal Over Alleged API Exclusivity Violation
Disputes between AI giants have escalated again. Microsoft is considering legal action against Amazon and OpenAI's $50 billion cloud collaboration deal, with the core dispute being whether OpenAI's enterprise AI Agent platform Frontier violates their API exclusivity agreement.
Microsoft gave up exclusive cloud service provider status last year but retained a key clause: all API access requests to OpenAI models must be routed through Azure. Amazon and OpenAI developed a "stateful runtime environment" to bypass this restriction, which Microsoft considers a breach.
OpenAI argues Frontier is not primarily provided as an API and does not cross the line, adding that Microsoft may not actually sue due to antitrust investigations. If the dispute goes to court, it could affect OpenAI's IPO plan this year.
