Microsoft Launches Copilot for Legal with 20+ AI Skills for Legal Work
Microsoft Vice Chair and President Brad Smith announced Copilot for Legal, giving business customers worldwide over 20 AI skills built for legal work. These skills come as legal plugins in Copilot, each targeting a specific task like drafting contracts, reviewing agreements, tracking obligations, or building case timelines.
The skills are built into Microsoft 365 Copilot and mainly run in the Word desktop app and the Cowork workspace. Word can review contracts against a company's preset rules, suggest changes in track-changes mode, and draft new contracts from past agreements. Cowork pulls key duties and deadlines from contracts, emails, and meeting notes, compares terms, and builds case timelines.
Microsoft also rolled out plugins made with partners like Bloomberg Law, DocuSign, and Harvey, covering legal research, document management, and e-signing. The company stressed the tool supports legal professionals rather than replacing their judgment, and AI outputs still need human checks. A Microsoft 365 Copilot business license is required.
