MIT study says relying on chatbots may weaken your critical thinking
A new study from MIT shows that relying too much on AI chatbots might make people worse at thinking critically. The study, published in April, lasted four weeks with 67 participants who judged whether news headlines and images were real or fake.
Using AI tools like Claude and ChatGPT helped participants get the right answer 21% more often. But the more they depended on AI, the worse they got at spotting misinformation on their own. By week four, their independent performance dropped by 15.3%. Researchers say AI often gives direct answers instead of helping users think through problems, which can lead to long-term cognitive dependence.
The study also found that about a quarter of participants thought they were getting better, but they were actually getting worse. Researchers warn that as AI becomes more common in schools and daily life, it's important to make sure these tools help build critical thinking, not replace it. The study mainly involved participants from the US and UK, so more research is needed to see if the effects are similar in other countries.
