NVIDIA to Invest $26 Billion Over 5 Years to Develop World's Leading Open-Source AI Models
NVIDIA announced it will invest $26 billion over 5 years to develop open-source AI models, marking its transition from a chipmaker to a top AI lab. The fund will cover model R&D, computing infrastructure, talent reserve and ecosystem building; the first models are expected to launch by late 2026 or early 2027.
The company adopts an open-weight strategy: releasing model parameters but not necessarily fully open-source, different from OpenAI's closed model and Meta Llama's fully open approach. This strategy can deeply optimize its own hardware, solidifying its leading position in the AI chip field. Financial analysts predict that if NVIDIA captures 10% of the basic model market, it could add $50 billion in annual revenue within three years.
