OpenAI CEO Altman admits: AI is unpopular in the US, often scapegoated for rising electricity prices and unemployment
OpenAI CEO Altman recently stated at the BlackRock U.S. Infrastructure Summit in Washington that the AI industry is facing difficulties and is not very popular in the U.S. AI is often used as a 'scapegoat'—data centers are blamed for pushing up electricity prices, and corporate layoffs are often attributed to AI, whether related or not.
Multiple polls show rising public concerns about AI in the U.S.: An NBC News survey found that 57% of voters believe AI's risks outweigh its benefits; Pew Research Center data shows that 50% of U.S. adults are 'more worried than excited' about the expansion of AI applications, up 13 percentage points from 2021.
Altman pointed out that while the U.S. leads China in AI competition, the advantage is not stable. The U.S. needs to solve supply chain issues and accelerate AI adoption in the economic sector, otherwise it may lose its advantage as a global economic power.
