OpenAI CEO Altman on GPT-5.5: It Planned Its Own Launch Event But Refused to Give a Toast
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman revealed in a fireside chat at Stripe Sessions that when he asked GPT-5.5 to plan its own launch event, the model gave a beautiful yet strange proposal: hold it on May 5, keep speeches short, have human developers toast, but it refused to give a toast itself.
GPT-5.5 also suggested setting up an area to collect user suggestions for GPT-6 and feed them back to the model, which Altman said they plan to do. Stripe's CEO mentioned that after giving an internal AI agent $20, it bought an HTTP design, surprising Altman.
Released in late April, GPT-5.5 is OpenAI's flagship model, good at complex multi-step tasks, faster, and more aware of users. Altman called such AI autonomous behaviors "strange emergent phenomena" and noted early models were obsessed with goblins and other fantasy creatures, requiring system prompts to restrict this.
