OpenAI is working on GPT-Bidi-1 model for a big ChatGPT voice upgrade

OpenAI is getting ready to launch the GPT-Bidi-1 model, which will be the biggest upgrade yet for ChatGPT's voice mode. This model uses a 'bidirectional' setup that can listen and talk at the same time, handling interruptions and adjusting mid-conversation.

Right now, OpenAI’s text models have quickly evolved to GPT-5.5, but the voice feature still relies on older audio tech, making spoken conversations less capable. The GPT-Bidi-1 model aims to close this gap. Once it's out, users can switch between the new bidirectional mode and the existing advanced voice mode, with options like High, Medium, and Instant for different tasks.
