OpenAI model used in live mouse brain surgery, error cut in half
Biotech company Exin Therapeutics says OpenAI's GPT-6.1 Sol took part in live mouse brain surgery. Over three rounds, the model improved its accuracy using surgeon feedback. Time to spot key brain landmarks fell from 169 seconds to 86 seconds, and positioning error dropped from 0.6 mm to 0.3 mm.
The model was not retrained. It adjusted its judgment using past experience and expert feedback, a real-world case of context learning. Human corrections fell from 4 to 2.
The work is still at an early stage with a tiny sample size, and results are not yet peer-reviewed. Licensed vets still handled cuts and skull openings. Human brain surgery remains a long way off.
