OpenAI raises GPT-6.1 Sol default context length to 500k and drops long context fees
OpenAI's Thibault Sottiaux (Tibo) announced that the default context length for GPT-6.1 Sol in Codex and Work has been raised to 500k, about 80% more than the previous 272k.
Tibo said OpenAI will keep raising the cap over time. This change means context compression gets triggered less often, so the model can better handle tasks that need to hold lots of context and details for a long time.
The number is well tested and hits the sweet spot between experience and performance for most users. Users can still set it manually, and GPT-6.1 Sol supports up to 1M at most.
Along with this change, OpenAI won't charge long context fees for GPT-6.1 Sol when deducting usage from subscriptions.
