OpenAI shows GPT-6 Astra designing real products, partners with Mazda

OpenAI has shared its latest progress on AI-assisted physical product development, showing how GPT-6 Astra handles mechanical, circuit, and software design. The company also announced a research partnership with Mazda to use the model for car design and simulation.

In an internal test, two team members used Astra to finish a test device that works with Codex in under a week. The model handled the look, casing, parts selection, circuit board layout, and firmware, and a factory built small batches of prototypes in less than a month.

OpenAI admits the model doesn't always account for production limits, tolerances, and assembly details, so more reviews and updates are needed before mass production.

On the auto side, OpenAI is working with Mazda engineers on airflow and structure simulations for new car designs. It is also expanding work with Chip Ganassi Racing, turning 3D scans of parts into editable CAD models to fix missing design files.
