Over 1,000 Mathematicians Join New Math and AI Alliance at Tsinghua University
The Yau Mathematical and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory Alliance has been launched at Tsinghua University in China. It will focus on building large language models made for math, using AI to help with formal proofs and discovering new conjectures, and developing explainable AI, aiming to bring AI and mathematics closer together.
The alliance has released more than 10 key research results and directions, covering geometry, quantum computing, and life sciences. In one study on 7-dimensional homotopy spheres, AI helped explore proof strategies and simplify calculations, while computer algebra systems checked equations and mathematicians finished the proofs and papers.
Over 1,000 mathematicians and researchers have joined, working with institutions including Tsinghua University's Qiuzhen College. Leader Shing-Tung Yau said mathematicians must ride the AI wave instead of hiding from it, and the alliance will explore China's own path to building math-focused large models.
