Pew Poll: Americans' Attitudes Towards Data Centers Become More Negative as They Know More
A Pew Research Center survey shows that the more Americans know about data centers, the more negative their attitudes become. As the AI boom drives rapid growth in data center numbers, the US now has over 1200 data centers and counting, with tech companies like Amazon and Microsoft increasing investments to train more powerful AI models.
The survey covered 8500 US adults: 25% said they know "a lot" about data centers, 50% "a little", and 25% "nothing at all". Among those who know a lot, two-thirds believe data centers have a negative impact on household electricity bills, and 63% think they harm the environment—compared to 42% and 48% respectively among those who know a little.
Oracle plans to invest $500 billion over four years to build AI infrastructure for OpenAI, but many communities outside Silicon Valley are not welcoming new data centers, citing higher electricity costs and environmental pressure. Related disputes have appeared in protests, municipal meetings, and congressional discussions.
