SoftBank Plans $66B Investment in Ohio, US to Build World's Largest AI Data Center
SoftBank Group plans to invest over $66 billion in Ohio, US, to build the world's largest AI data center with a total power capacity of 10 gigawatts (GW). This demand will account for one-third of Ohio's total power generation capacity (about 30 GW) in 2024, significantly impacting the local energy system.
The investment will be split into two parts: $30-40 billion for computing infrastructure and $33 billion for a natural gas power plant equivalent to 9 nuclear reactors. The data center will be located in a 3,700-acre park in Piketon. SB Energy will deploy 9.2 GW of gas turbines plus 800 MW of backup capacity, and American Electric Power will invest $4.2 billion to upgrade the grid.
Full deployment is expected by 2030. The first phase will be operational within a year, possibly using Nvidia Rubin architecture or AMD Instinct MI455X accelerators; later phases may use Nvidia Feynman series or AMD MI600/700 chips. This project is part of the US-Japan bilateral investment plan.
