South Korea plans to spend 5 trillion won on Nvidia GPUs to boost its own AI
South Korea's government wants to use tax money from the AI boom to speed up its own AI development. Samsung and SK Hynix made a lot of money from the AI wave, which means more tax income for the government.
But earlier AI plans had problems with scattered resources, so local AI models fell behind global leaders. Now the science ministry plans to spend 5 trillion won (about 21.89 billion yuan) to buy 10,000 Nvidia Rubin GPUs. A single top team will use them to build a strong AI model.
The move comes as South Korea worries about AI supply chain safety. Recent export controls on models from Anthropic and OpenAI show that old alliances may not hold in the AI era. Building its own model and relying less on foreign tech is seen as key. The goal is to finish the advanced model by the first half of 2027.
