SpaceX confirms its orbital AI data center project is called Starmind
Elon Musk confirmed on X that SpaceX's orbital AI data center project is called Starmind. The plan involves launching up to one million computing satellites into low Earth orbit to expand AI computing power.
SpaceX has filed an application with the U.S. Federal Communications Commission, aiming to start in 2026. The first-generation hardware, AI1, is 20 meters tall with a 70-meter wingspan. Each satellite delivers an average of 120kW of computing power, peaking at 150kW, similar to a modern AI server rack on the ground.
Starmind satellites will connect to Starlink via high-speed optical links, which then relay data to ground stations, creating a complete chain of orbital computing, space communication, and ground access.
