U.S. plans 50% stock tax on big AI companies, giving citizens over $1,000 a year
U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders proposed the 'American AI Sovereign Wealth Fund Act' to impose a one-time 50% stock tax on the highest-valued AI companies. The taxed stocks would go into a federal sovereign wealth fund, giving the public 50% ownership of these companies. At current valuation, the fund could reach about $7 trillion, and with a 5% annual dividend, each U.S. citizen would get over $1,000. The bill plans a 7-member independent committee, nominated by the president and confirmed by the Senate, to manage the fund. The committee would hold voting shares and could veto corporate decisions harming public interest. Sanders argues that AI technology builds on collective human knowledge and shouldn't be monopolized by tech oligarchs, aiming to break monopolies and let the public share AI's economic benefits.
