UN AI report: AI is growing faster than science and policy can keep up
A UN AI expert group of 40 top scientists released its first report, saying AI is growing fast and brings big opportunities but also real risks. The report says AI is improving faster than science can understand and faster than governments can change policies.
Co-chair Yoshua Bengio warned that AI can be deceptive, and as it gets stronger, there's no guarantee it won't cause disaster—either on its own or used by bad people. The report also says AI may harm mental health, be used as a destructive tool, and increase the risk of losing control.
Right now, over 1 billion people use conversational AI every week, but developing countries are falling behind. Of the world's top 500 AI supercomputers, the US has 75% of the computing power, and China has 15%. AI models only cover a few of the over 7,000 languages, and translation errors in some languages can even mess up medical diagnoses.
