US Startup Tries Integrating Offshore Wind Power with AI Computing: Adding Data Centers to Wind Turbine Platforms
Aikido Technologies, a San Francisco-based startup focused on offshore wind turbines, is trying to add data centers to its turbine platforms. The company plans to launch a 100 kW integrated unit in the North Sea near Norway by the end of 2026, combining wind turbines with AI servers.
This initiative aims to solve the power and space challenges faced by large-scale AI computing enterprises, especially projects stuck due to the 'NIMBY' effect. Its semi-submersible design uses three ballast tank legs; the upper part can hold 3-4 MW data rooms, making a single turbine potentially a 9-12 MW data center. The freshwater cooling system uses North Sea water for natural cooling, giving it strong cost competitiveness.
However, unstable wind power requires battery storage, and the corrosive marine environment may increase maintenance costs. Notably, China also put a wind-powered underwater data center prototype into use in Shanghai last October.
