WeChat AI Team Wins ICASSP Best Industrial Paper Award, First Chinese Enterprise to Receive It

WeChat AI Team's Pattern Recognition Center won the Best Industrial Paper Award at ICASSP 2026 with their paper 'Less Redundancy: Boosting Practicality of Vision Language Model in Walking Assistants'. This is the first time a Chinese enterprise team has won the award since its establishment in 2016; previously, it was mostly awarded to foreign companies like Meta and Microsoft.

The team's WalkVLM-LR model is designed for walking assistance for visually impaired people, focusing on reducing redundancy—both output redundancy (avoiding excessive information) and time redundancy (avoiding frequent reminders), solving the problem of when vision language models should alert users. Currently, the model's delay is controlled at the millisecond level, with usable real-time performance, though further optimization is needed for actual deployment.
