X Platform Restricts Ask Grok Feature to Paid Subscribers; Free Users Can't Get Replies by @Grok
X platform recently adjusted Grok's usage permissions quietly. Free users no longer get AI replies when @Grok in posts; instead, they receive a prompt stating the feature is only available to Premium and Premium+ subscribers. Multiple tech media confirmed this change is not a glitch, and only non-subscribed accounts are blocked.
Ask Grok is a feature within X platform that allows users to get AI replies directly in the thread by @Grok under posts without leaving the timeline. This restriction means using the feature now requires a subscription to X Premium ($8/month) or Premium+ ($40/month). However, Grok's independent website grok.com and its standalone subscription service SuperGrok are unaffected—free users can still access basic features there.
This is the second time X has tightened Grok's free usage scope this year. In January, due to the misuse of Grok's image generation feature for non-consensual deepfake porn, X restricted that feature to paid users. Currently, neither X nor xAI has issued an official statement regarding this adjustment.
