Yann LeCun warns AI industry faces cost crisis
Yann LeCun, a pioneer in AI, said in a recent interview that the industry faces high operating costs. He noted that AI model and assistant prices keep rising, but companies running these services are still losing money, and costs aren't dropping as fast as expected.
LeCun said many AI services stay cheap only because investors are quietly subsidizing them, and many companies haven't built sustainable business models. He warned that OpenAI and Anthropic must raise prices or cut costs, or their big bubble could burst.
LeCun also criticized Elon Musk's xAI, calling it "a failure in some sense," with many founding team members leaving and trouble attracting new talent. He advocates for a world model concept instead of the large language model approach.
