Zhang Chaoyang on AI in Science Popularization: Convenient but Needs Guidance; Over-reliance Shrinks Thinking
At the 2026 Sohu Tech Annual Forum, Zhang Chaoyang, founder of Sohu, discussed AI's role in science popularization. He mentioned AI tools can quickly provide formulas and directional guidance, reducing data organization time from days to one day—greatly benefiting basic science outreach.
But Zhang stressed that quality popularization shouldn't just pass on information; it needs to guide audiences to compute and research on their own. He noted many science popularization pieces use vague metaphors instead of explaining principles, straying from the core of popularization. The AI era should prioritize logical deduction and interactive experiences.
Regarding over-reliance on AI, he cited an MIT study: excessive dependence on AI leads to a decline in active thinking—people who finish tasks independently have twice the brain activity of those using AI. He urged preserving original thinking and hands-on abilities, calling these humans' irreplaceable core strengths.
