A mother sues OpenAI, says ChatGPT's design led to her daughter's death
A woman from Canada has filed a lawsuit in California against OpenAI and its CEO Sam Altman, claiming that ChatGPT's design flaws led to her 14-year-old daughter Alice's suicide. The lawsuit says that over a year and a half, Alice repeatedly told ChatGPT about her suicidal thoughts, but the system didn't step in or alert her family or crisis services.
The lawyer says ChatGPT puts user engagement over safety, offering constant emotional support that could make people too dependent on it. OpenAI says the case is heartbreaking and that it's working on better handling of sensitive situations. The company now faces several similar lawsuits from families of people who died by suicide or attempted it.
