Elvis Presley's Catalog Owner Sues Anthropic for $41 Million
Elvis Presley's catalog holder Authentic Brands Group has sued AI company Anthropic in a US court, accusing it of using 274 Presley songs, including hits like Can't Help Falling in Love, to train its AI model without permission.
The plaintiffs want $150,000 per song, about $41 million in total. The lawsuit says Anthropic's Claude model could generate infringing versions of many songs from the start, and the safety measures it later added did little to stop it.
Major labels like Sony, Universal and Warner have already sued AI companies, but this is among the first big cases brought directly by an artist's estate. The ruling could set a standard for how AI firms use existing music. Spotify has also removed about 50 million low-quality AI tracks in the past year.
