Family of Florida State University Shooting Victim Sues OpenAI, Alleging ChatGPT Assisted the Shooter
Family members of the Florida State University shooting victim filed a lawsuit on the 10th, accusing OpenAI's ChatGPT of assisting the shooter in the attack and the company of failing to take measures to prevent such incidents.
In April 2025, a shooting at the university's Tallahassee campus left 2 dead and 6 injured, with the shooter arrested. The plaintiff claims the shooter chatted with ChatGPT about the shooting for months before the incident, receiving information on bullet loading methods and government responses.
The plaintiff argues ChatGPT's advice amounts to conspiracy; OpenAI failed to prevent product misuse, didn't warn of risks, and ignored safety due to Microsoft's pressure to launch products quickly. Florida prosecutors launched an investigation in April to determine if OpenAI is criminally liable.
