Google DeepMind Enters Game AI: Acquires Minority Stake in Eve Online Developer to Train AI via Complex Scenarios
Google's AI lab DeepMind recently announced it has acquired a minority stake in Fenris Creations, the developer of Eve Online, and plans to train AI in the game. Eve Online is a 23-year-old massive multiplayer online game known for its complex space scenarios and social simulations.
Adrian Bolton, senior director at DeepMind, noted that the game requires long-term strategic planning skills—an area where current AI research is weak. The game's virtual society includes complex interactions like trade and political gaming, providing an ideal data source for AI research.
To avoid affecting existing players, DeepMind will initially conduct research on isolated servers, and the game developer will use the research results to optimize player experience.
