Meta Accelerates AI Transformation: 7,000 Employees Transferred to 4 AI Departments Amid Layoff Plans
Meta is accelerating its AI transformation through layoffs and internal transfers recently. According to reports, the company plans to lay off about 8,000 employees (10% of total staff) on May 20, while closing 6,000 unfulfilled positions. Additionally, around 7,000 employees will be transferred to four new AI organizations to strengthen AI R&D capabilities.
The new AI organizations adopt an "AI native design structure" with fewer management layers, better suited for AI R&D needs. Meta CEO Zuckerberg has repeatedly emphasized that AI is the company's future core. This year, Meta plans to invest $115 billion to $135 billion in data centers and AI R&D to catch up with competitors like Google and OpenAI. Affected employees will receive 16 weeks of severance pay, plus an additional 2 weeks per year of service.
