Meta Tweaks Employee Tracking System, Allows Up to 30-Minute Pause
Meta has updated its internal employee tracking system MCI (Model Capability Initiative), allowing workers to pause data collection for up to 30 minutes and apply for exemptions. The system gathers mouse movements, clicks, and other actions from over 200 apps and websites to train AI agents for daily software tasks.
At an all-hands meeting in April, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said using employee data to train AI models gives the company an edge in the competitive AI race. He noted that Meta's employees have a higher average intelligence than typical workers hired through contractors.
The MCI system faced pushback from employees over privacy concerns and battery drain. Stephane Kasriel, VP at Meta Superintelligence Labs, stated in a memo that the team still believes in the privacy protections set at launch but will make improvements to address feedback.
