OpenAI CEO Altman Responds to Sora Shutdown: Concentrate Computing Resources, Similar to Pre-GPT-3 Strategy
In March this year, OpenAI suddenly shut down its video generation service Sora to simplify its AI product line. In the Mostly Human podcast interview on April 2nd, CEO Sam Altman explained that although he loves Sora and the collaboration with Disney, the company needs to concentrate computing and product capabilities on next-generation automation research.
Altman mentioned that they had considered integrating Sora into ChatGPT, but the resource demands of video generation would lead to decisions they were unwilling to make. This is similar to the strategy before the release of GPT-3—when they shut down projects like robotics to focus resources. At the end of 2025, Disney invested $1 billion to become Sora's first authorized partner. Altman informed former Disney CEO Bob Iger in advance, and Disney's current CEO expressed understanding and respect for the strategic adjustment.
