OpenAI CEO Sam Altman admits his predictions about AI killing jobs were wrong
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman admitted at a tech conference this week that his earlier predictions about AI eliminating many entry-level jobs were off the mark. He said the short-term impact on white-collar junior roles hasn't been as severe as he feared, and added, "I'm glad I was wrong."
Since ChatGPT launched in 2022, Altman had repeatedly warned that AI could seriously hit the job market. He once said "entire categories" of jobs could disappear. But so far, the predicted 'job apocalypse' hasn't happened. Still, companies like Block, Snap, and Meta have cited AI in recent layoffs.
Altman stressed that even if his forecasts were inaccurate, AI companies need to be open about the technology's potential effects. He said AI will impact many people in society, so everyone should be part of the conversation, pushing for more transparency.
