OpenAI drops plan for fully autonomous AI, shifts to human-AI teamwork
OpenAI has changed its AI research strategy, dropping the earlier plan to build a fully autonomous AI system by March 2028. Instead, the company now focuses on human-AI collaboration, saying full automation is not the future they want.
CEO Sam Altman said that as AI systems get smarter, the role of humans becomes even more important—like setting goals, weighing pros and cons, and using judgment. OpenAI expects that by March 2028, a significant part of research work will be done by AI together with human researchers.
Altman also proposed creating an international organization to coordinate leading AI efforts and reduce catastrophic risks. This group should be able to slow down the development of frontier AI when needed, so that society's resilience, safety, and coordination can keep up.
