OpenAI Foundation Puts $250 Million into AI Job Impact
OpenAI's non-profit arm is putting $250 million into studying how AI affects jobs and helping workers and communities hit by tech changes. It's the first time the foundation has launched such a fund, aiming to find new ways to share AI's economic benefits. The group says tech is changing faster than ever, and messing up could cause big problems. Tools that can write code are becoming common, and companies like Block and Standard Chartered have cut jobs, citing AI efficiency. Last year, after a restructuring, the foundation got a 26% stake in OpenAI's for-profit arm, valued at $130 billion. In March, OpenAI promised to spend at least $1 billion on AI projects in areas like life science and community services over the next year. The first projects will be announced later this year, and the foundation will run some directly, not just hand out money.
