OpenAI plans price cuts to beat Anthropic, eyes IPO
According to the Wall Street Journal, OpenAI is planning to significantly cut its token fees to win over users from rival Anthropic. Insiders say OpenAI expects Anthropic to follow with similar price cuts.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said the company is refining its models and looking for ways to reduce costs to deliver more value for less. He noted that AI cost issues have recently come to the forefront, but by early 2026, users may stop caring about expenses.
On the financial side, OpenAI filed a confidential S-1 registration draft with the SEC on June 9, paving the way for a future IPO. The company stressed that no decision has been made on going public, and it may take some time. Meanwhile, rival Anthropic has also secretly filed for an IPO, with the number of shares and pricing yet to be determined.
