OpenAI's Astra model marks the start of the AGI era
OpenAI recently released a new model called Astra. At the launch event, company president Greg Brockman said Astra marks the start of the AGI era. OpenAI defines AGI as a highly autonomous system that outperforms humans in most economically valuable work, and sees Astra as a major research breakthrough that expands what people can delegate to AI.
Brockman noted that reaching AGI isn't a sudden moment but a gradual process, yet he believes that looking back, AGI might be seen as starting with this generation of models. Astra comes about a year after the GPT-5 series and can reportedly handle tasks like filling out forms, formatting documents, scheduling appointments, and operating software. It's described as 'the world's smartest and most aligned model.'
Meanwhile, Demis Hassabis, co-founder of Google DeepMind, predicts AGI could arrive as early as 2030, saying humanity is at the foot of the singularity mountain.
