OpenAI says its AI model made three major scientific breakthroughs
OpenAI announced that its AI model has made three major breakthroughs in math, computer science, and physics. It can discover and prove complex scientific theories on its own, not just answer questions.
In math, the model proved a conjecture about wave behavior in all dimensions and solved the Kakeya conjecture. In computer science, it overturned a long-held idea called the Exponential Time Hypothesis. In physics, it gave strict math proofs that certain quantum field theories exist, touching one of the famous Millennium Prize Problems.
The math and computer science results were formally checked with a tool called Lean, and the proofs are public on GitHub. The physics result is being reviewed by experts led by Nobel Prize winner David Gross.
OpenAI said these results still need further independent review from the academic community. The findings may help researchers build faster algorithms.
