Stanford AI Professor's Advice: AI Industry Leaders Need Empathy to Gain US Communities' Support for Data Centers
Stanford AI professor Angeni Mida advised AI industry leaders like Elon Musk: To get Americans to accept data centers, they first need to learn empathy. He noted that many local communities oppose new data centers, mainly because tech companies haven't fully explained their impact and purpose. Without showing empathy and listening to community opinions, these communities will become major obstacles.
US communities' concerns about data centers focus on rising electricity bills (43% of respondents think data centers push up their bills), environmental damage, noise, and declining quality of life. Some politicians have spoken out—Senators from Vermont and others propose a federal pause on new data center projects, and states like Maine are considering similar bans.
Mida believes tech companies should be more transparent about data centers' purpose and impact, such as using a nutrition label-like approach to provide clear information. He opposes extreme positions, advocating for expanding infrastructure while listening to communities' substantive concerns to narrow differences.
